Vision and Mission
The National Network of State School Improvement Leaders (NNSSIL) is a network of state leaders engaged in developing an evidence-based body of knowledge that can lead to accelerating sustainable school, district and state improvement to raise educational results for all learners. Its mission is to provide collegial support among state leaders of school improvement to build, utilize and disseminate a robust body of knowledge of professional practices leading to systemic educational change.

The Network's Goals
- To provide continuous learning among members to most effectively lead a strong statewide
system of support in each state and territory.
- To increase the shared knowledge across states and the facilitation of improved practices through coordinated work.
- To align the conditions and working relationships between the federal and state systems of support.
Fundamental Working Premises
- The Network will utilize an evidenced-based body of knowledge in professional practices and an inquiry-based approach in its process to generate innovative ways, build capacity and sustain systemic change.
- Improving teacher practice is fundamental and necessary to school improvement and increased student learning.
- Improving principal practice is the most effective means to improve teacher practice.
- Improving superintendent leadership is the most effective means to improving principal practice.
- Improving school board leadership is the most effective means to improve superintendent leadership.
- All statewide systems of support must positively impact all of the above.
- All stakeholders, including parents, civic, business and religious communities must be engaged to sustain systemic change.
- State leaders of school and district improvements should lead their respective systems of support.
- Systems of support at the federal, state and local levels should align, complement and support one another, acknowledging the interdependence of all parties.
Components of the Network
- Initial face-to-face summit at the Center on Innovation & Improvement (CII) Institute on School Improvement and Education Options on September 2008 in Chicago
- Annual face-to-face meetings integrated with and/or complementary to meetings of state chiefs and deputies
- Platforms for disseminating and sharing cutting-edge ideas and discriminating between successful and unsuccessful practices
- Be the sounding board for the U.S. Department of Education on issues of school improvement, representing all the state education agencies
- Direct communication with US DoE leaders
- Monthly webinars on hot topics
- Topic- or issue-specific products such as lists of contacts, models, sample query protocols, and matrices
- Monthly communication through the Support for School Improvement E-Newsletter
- Inquiry into collaboration with other educational improvement organizations, such as American Association of School Administrators, National Association of State Boards, National Governors Association, etc.
